We are so excited for the upcoming centenary celebration day on Saturday 3rd October 2026. As part of the event we are pleased to announce that local sculptor Ben Twisten-Davis has been commissioned to create a bronze piece that will be a lasting legacy. Ben has previously created the Ebenezer Howard statue that stands in Howardsgate, so we know it is in excellent hands!

Why Welly Boots?
Some Welwyn Garden Citizens will already be aware that the train station started life as a muddy halt, actually slightly north of it’s current position. The early London commuting residents would be required to trudge over a field in wellington boots. Then, when the train arrives, change into their dress shoes and leave the boots at the station. A contemporary Punch cartoon captured this which has been reproduced with permission on the station footbridge.
In homage to this the All Aboarders this year installed joyful welly boot planters on the station. However these will be a temporary feature as the boots are not designed to last outside. The sculpture will be our permanent reminder of both the WGC pioneers and our station centenary.

How can I help?
With generous help already secured from a local charity and another company, the All Aboarders are now appealing for the last £2000 required to bring this commission to reality and have it installed at the station.
