A look back at our successful 2024 Makeover Day which was held on the 13th March. The day attracted around 30 volunteers and supporters made up of: All Aboarders, Siemens Mobility, GTR, Network Rail, Rotary, sponsors Crane & Staples, local councillors & the Mayor of WHBC and some members of the public.

The main event of the day was creating a new sensory bed, sponsored by Siemens Mobility. Plants were chosen for their sensory qualities such a scent and texture, plus some edible herbs. An existing flat bed on platforms 1/2 South was cleared of most plants leaving some mature shrubs. New plants were purchased from and set out by Garden-on-a-Roll. Volunteers then planted them and added new compost. We are excited to see how this new bed grows and brings a new dimension to the station.

Five high quality square planters, made by Herts Woodwork, were securely bolted to the platforms by GTR and then lined, filled with compost and planted up.
Each contains a different impactful shrub and will be underplanted for year round interest.

Existing troughs were given a new coat of wood treatment to strengthen them and keep them looking fresh. The old sign posts were also brightened up with white paint.
Volunteers also worked on existing beds weeding, planting and adding compost. The many hands made light work of these areas!

Three further historic posters featuring Welwyn Garden City were installed in the waiting room on platform 2.

WGC Rotary presented a £200 cheque as part of their ongoing support for the All Aboarders. Their donations go towards maintenance of the raised beds on platforms 1/2.

Our thanks also to Frank and the staff of Marchio’s cafe on Platform 1/2 who provided breakfast, lunch and drinks to all who attended the makeover day.

We are grateful to the Welwyn Hatfield Times for their coverage of our activities before and after the day. Please take a look at the online article here:
